Charismatic Speaker Does Not Amuse Me

Last week I attended a Zero Waste lecture put on by ImagineCo in London Ontario. The guest speaker is Haneel and he owns ImagineCo. He came to discuss ways on introducing zero waste ideas in our personal lives. He talked about no longer buying prepackaged foods, taking home containers with you when you eat out so that you are not throwing out the restaurant containers after dinner, and even suggesting that if you leave your travel mug at home you forgo the coffee altogether. While the audience was mesmerized by his charismatic nature, all I saw was a retailer scoring another venue at the college. Haneel talked about how to change your life and make it better. He sounded like a life coach and lets not forget he got paid very well for that 2 hour spiel. I got turned off within 30 minutes of the 2 hour lecture. It is not financially feasible nor logical to turn your world upside down just because someone made you feel guilty that you weren’t environmentally responsible like them. I was not amused. The other thing that got my goat was that he set up a pop up shop outside the auditorium to sell his wares. I am way too smart to get fooled by his tactics. Always remember that if someone starts off with “I’m doing this for you, chances are its never about you, They are solely working for themselves. Be informed, but remember all life coaches in any arena are out to make money off you.
